Dr. James McKiernan received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1996 and his undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Vermont in 1986.
Dr. Jim has been practicing small animal medicine in New Hampshire since 1996. Dr. Jim has many interests within the field of veterinary medicine. These include, but are not limited to; internal medicine, canine and feline behavior, dermatology, surgery, reproductive medicine, and ophthalmology.
It was at Tufts that Dr. Jim met renowned dog trainer Brian Kilcommons. Brian was an adjunct lecturer at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, instructing veterinary students about canine behavior and its clinical applications. Since then, Dr. Jim has become one of the few veterinarians to be mentored by Brian. Dr. Jim’s clinical approach and bedside manner reflect his training.
From 1997-2000, Dr. Jim appeared weekly on ABC-WMUR Television in NH. The program, called “Pet Set,” not only involved educating the viewing audience about the health of their pets but also found homes for over one hundred homeless pets. His practice has been highlighted by New Hampshire Public Television and he has consulted with many print outlets including Parade Magazine and Comcast. Currently, he is a regular guest on WBZ radio's Boston Nightside with Dan Rea.
Dr Jim is an active member of the New Hampshire and Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Associations as well as the American Veterinary Medical Association. Since 2005, Dr. Jim has contributed to the New Hampshire Society for the Protection of Cruelty of Animals as a member of the board of directors and currently works with Save One Animal Rescue to assist in the medical and surgical needs as well as the adoption process of shelter pets.
